At the SnowShoot in Montana, we had the opportunity to test the latest Catalyst platform from Arctic Cat. We were able to put the M600 Alpha One 2024 to the test in heavy snow. We can already say that the new chassis really impressed us. And we can even say that the future of the brand looks very promising with the arrival of the Catalyst platform.

Brand new Catalyst platform

At first glance, it becomes clear that the Catalyst platform has been redesigned from the ground up. The main element is the centralization of the masses and the positioning of the rider in the middle. This gives us the impression of a ¾ size snowmobile compared to other snowmobiles. When you get on it, the impression is confirmed and you find yourself with a smaller snowmobile. Despite this, the ergonomics are very interesting with a thin tank and a much narrower seat. Moving around on the machine is very easy and the reduced width of the fairing provides excellent vision all around.

At the front, a particular design with an upward pointing muzzle reminds us of the Snowcross racing models. It’s topped off with an asymmetrical light with powerful LEDs to light up the night. As we walk around, we notice the abundant use of composites (plastics). The manufacturer tried to use as much plastic as possible with a specific goal in mind: to reduce the weight to obtain a very maneuverable snowmobile. It is a success! We will come back to this in the riding impressions…

The manufacturer also opted for a minimalist dial. It is easy to read, provides basic information and is perfect for a mountain snowmobile. The many controls have been centralized and are better integrated than before. In short, it’s ideal for the off-road segment. Except for the controls on the left side, which could be moved elsewhere to free up the handlebars.

Engine

Currently, only one engine is offered with this new chassis. It’s the C-TEC2 two-stroke engine with 599 cc. Delivering 125 horsepower, this engine responds well even if it doesn’t offer the refinement of the other companies. There is more vibration and throttle response is not as quick as we would like. Still, the reduced weight is a great advantage for the M600, which counterbalances the situation.

Its superior handling makes us forget about its dated engine and it does very well overall. We have to admit that we are already looking forward to seeing an 850-class machine make its debut. And possibly a 650 class engine a few seasons later. To be continued…

Another interesting aspect is that the manufacturer decided to use a belt drive instead of a chain case. Again, the main reason is to reduce the weight as much as possible and for the mountain segment, this configuration is suitable. However, the team is holding back on the trail segment (ZR600) and hybrid segment (RIOT). The future will confirm this.

Driving impressions

The first few minutes on board, you feel a little unsettled because the size is smaller than usual. However, we can only see the advantages since the displacement for maneuvers is superior to other brands. Its lightness is remarkable and our efforts are really reduced to make side hill for example. The 36″ spacing of the skis is well balanced to offer stability, but also to facilitate our movements. The Alpha One single-arm rear suspension performs extremely well in powder. The snow never sticks to it and we benefit from a notable advantage of not having any dead weight accumulating on it.

The slim fairing, narrow footboards and short tunnel all promote efficient snow removal. Drag in the powder is also greatly reduced, allowing you to conserve energy throughout the day. Three words to remember: maneuverability, balance and lightness. That describes the Arctic Cat M600 2024.

Point to note: a good portion of the running boards are made of plastic. So, we get an excellent bite and it will be possible to change them after a season or more. We’ll see what happens when we hit the stumps and if it was a good idea…

Strong points

– Finally a new platform for this manufacturer that really needed it.
– Centralization of the mass which offers an impressive handling.
– Three well-designed models (ZR, RIOT, M) to start the very first season.

Points to improve

– Mechanics in the 600/650 class only. When will the next 850 class be available?
– Reliability to be proven.
– Abundant use of plastics… Will there be premature wear of certain components?

Conclusion

The Arctic Cat M600 2024 brings a much needed wind of change to this manufacturer. An innovative platform that changes perceptions and will possibly redefine certain aspects of the industry. In the meantime, the 600cc engine offers interesting performance. Combined with the Catalyst platform, this snowmobile offers superior handling and a surprisingly light weight. However, we can only wish for a new generation of 850-class engines, and for now we’re still waiting for the day when we’ll be able to fully exploit this new chassis.
