Once again, the Quebec manufacturer has succeeded in taking us into another dimension of snowmobiling. Electronics have been around for many years, but never before has this aspect really been transposed to suspensions. BRP will make history in 2022 with a brand new concept! Here is the 2022 Ski-Doo Overview.
Ski-Doo is also attacking another portion of the market, that of the high performance 4-stroke, the 900 ACE TURBO R! Let’s just say that this one was hoped for by many. The legendary MACH Z name is back!
900 ACE Turbo R
Many were asking for it, the decision to bring a turbo 4-stroke to 2019 was very well thought out by the Valcourt-based manufacturer. When it arrived, the 150-horsepower 900 ACE Turbo was in a class of its own, where no other manufacturer had gone before. However, it was easy to foresee that performance companies would quickly jump at the opportunity to push the limits of the 4-stroke. As early as 2019, programs appeared that significantly increased the power output, demonstrating its reliability. It was predictable after a three season reliability guarantee that the 900 ACE Turbo would change its vocation to play with the most powerful in the industry…
The new Rotax thoroughbred sets the mark at 180 horsepower. This is the most powerful engine ever produced in a Ski-Doo snowmobile. Now the question on everyone’s lips, will it be able to compete with the Thundercat and SRX of this world?
Let’s talk numbers, a 900 ACE TURBO version 2019 to 2021 delivers according to BRP 150 horsepower, but some dynos revealed more power, if we transpose the thirty additional horsepower on the same dynos, we find a power certainly higher than the one announced… By comparing the power to weight ratio, we can easily say that there will be a serious competition in 2022 with the other manufacturers
Where the extra power comes from: A turbo of roughly the same size but optimized to provide 17.4 pounds of boost compared to the 10.2 pounds of the 150-horsepower version. Combined with this extra boost, engineers added larger injectors to ensure fuel supply, an optimized intake, as well as a muffler and intercooler to properly cool the pressurized air that is fed into the engine.
With this very significant increase in power, engineers also improved the stiffness of the motor mounts, and of course, modified some components of the pDrive primary clutch to properly deliver power to the track…
Since the arrival of the electronic throttle, comments were mixed. You get used to it, but it’s not as precise as a cable throttle. For the new season, BRP is offering a cable throttle that will activate the ITC electronic system. This addition allows a longer throttle travel, offers a more natural feel and is easier to use in very bumpy conditions. Finally, we are back this year with the electro-mechanical recoil, and the cherry on the sunday, a sound that will turn heads…
900 ACE TURBO – 130 horsepower
The disappearance of the 150-hp version, replaced by the 180-hp version, leaves a power range unoccupied by the manufacturer. In order to be able to compete in the 130 horsepower class, Ski-Doo marketing presents a new version of the 900 ACE TURBO with 130 horsepower. This new engine is in some ways identical to the 2019-2021 version, with less boost and the intercooler removed. This engine will power the Renegade Adrenaline, Renegade Enduro and Grand Touring Limited.
2022 Ski-Doo Overview – Smart-Shox! Suspension
BRP innovates again! Established for a few years in the world of side-by-side vehicles, it was only a matter of time before a similar concept saw the light of day in the world of snowmobiles… Welcome to the electronic air, here is the Smart Shox suspension!
This new semi-active suspension is equipped with KYB PRO Smart-Shox dual-tube shocks, both in the front position and in the middle and rear position. Fully electronically controlled, 5 sensors interact at a rate of 50 times per second to increase or decrease the internal pressure of the four shocks. Three characteristics define the operation, handling, capacity and performance.
In terms of operation, the shock absorbers interact with each other during cornering, acceleration and braking. For example, when cornering, the pressure is increased on the outer shock absorber to keep the vehicle in line, when accelerating, the rear shock absorber will become stiffer to avoid too much lift of the skis etc. On the capacity side now, the suspension will interact according to the bumps on the ground, thus avoiding the suspension to collapse completely during a big bump for example. On the capacity side, during a jump, the computer will detect that the shock absorbers become completely stretched, and will automatically increase the internal restriction to ensure a good landing. The third aspect, performance, allows the driver to select three modes of operation, a comfort mode, a sports mode and for the more extreme, the sport+ mode. This new suspension will be available as an option only in the spring on the Mach Z, MXZ 850, Renegade XRS 850 and 900 Turbo R models.
2022 Ski-Doo Overview – Mach Z – She’s back!
And yes!!! BRP’s major state is bringing back the legendary MACH Z name in 2022! For the first time in its history the pure sans will be equipped with a 4-stroke engine, the famous 900 ACE Turbo R with 180 horsepower. It comes standard with the Smart-Shox electronic suspension, which electronically controls the 4 KYB PRO shocks on the bike. To add a touch of performance, and let’s face it, no one saw this coming, a launch control system, or commonly called anti-lag!
The concept of a turbo is simple, two turbines connected by a shaft, one of them is located in the exhaust, and the other in the intake. When the engine gains in revolution, it activates the revolution of the two turbines and pushes under pressure the air in the intake.
It is easy to imagine that it takes a few fractions of a second or even a second or two before the turbo revolution increases. This phenomenon, known as “lag”, does not usually provide a very good start. Well known in the racing world, the engineers have equipped the MACH Z with a button that delays the ignition. When the throttle is fully depressed, the explosion is delayed and takes place when the exhaust valves start to open, which pushes a lot of pressure into the exhaust without increasing the revolution beyond the clutch point. Thus, the turbo rises in revolution, pushing a pressure between 9 and 10 PSI, without increasing the RPM. When the pilot releases the button, the engine automatically re-ignites and offers much more power due to the 9-10 PSI of pressure, for a much faster and more powerful start.
The MACH Z will come fully equipped with the 7.8″ screen, RAS X and rMotion X suspension with Smart-Shox, a 1.5″ lower center of gravity for better aerodynamics. Available only in preseason.
Summit X
For the new season, the entire Summit X line will be equipped with the lightweight hood used only on last year’s turbo model. The big news for 2022 is the ski spacing, Ski-Doo is pushing the envelope to 34 inches for the next season! A huge gain in agility, facilitating maneuvers in deep snow according to engineers. Available only on X models with the Expert package. Finally, lighter front and center shock springs.
Summit EDGE
Amortisseur HPG
The newest addition to the mountain range comes in between the SP and X versions. Three track lengths: 154, 165 and 175, and will be available throughout the season. Standard features include a short tunnel, Shot starter, and a compact, lightweight seat.
Renegade Enduro
Some nice new features for the Renegade Enduro 2022, we add the 7.8 inch color digital display with the possibility to display the trail map, the rMotion X rear suspension with ACS air shock, and the RAS X front suspension with Pilot TX skis! Better stability and comfort, essential for a snowmobile of this category!
