For 2017, Yamaha surprised the snowmobile world with the arrival of the SideWinder and its 180 HP. In this context, the media attention was focused on the different versions of the new standard, which had the effect of overshadowing the rest of the Japanese manufacturer’s 2017 lineup. However, Yamaha Engine’s representatives in Quebec, Francois Morneau and Steeve Bolduc, had the good idea to let me rediscover the SR-Viper in its STX-DX version.

This model is most likely the version best suited for the serious solo trail rider who travels several hundred kilometers a day. Indeed, the STX-DX offers a configuration that favors comfort without compromising the sporty side of the Viper series. Equipped with the powerful and robust Genesys engine developing 130 hp, all Vipers are based on the renowned SRV chassis offering a sporty yet comfortable ride. Thanks to the oversized windshield of this version, the rider is well protected from the wind, especially in cold weather. The mirrors are integrated into the windshield and are perfectly positioned and dimensioned to provide a very good rear view. In terms of comfort, the heated seat is an option that I have learned to appreciate, especially during long rides in the cold temperatures of Quebec. Of course, the standard semi-rigid luggage is the perfect option for this type of snowmobile, and it fits in very well with the sporty look of the vehicle.

2017 Yamaha SRViper STX-DX Test – Equipped with the powerful and robust Genesys engine developing 130 hp, all Vipers are based on the renowned SRV chassis offering a sporty yet comfortable ride.

From the very beginning of my test ride, I rediscovered the qualities of the Yamaha 4-stroke engine. I particularly appreciate the distinctive sound of the Genesys engine, which is both sporty and not too noisy. Although I only tested it for one week, the reputation of this engine inspires confidence and allows Viper buyers to plan on riding for several seasons without worrying about engine reliability. Of course, the torque of this engine is still impressive, offering good acceleration and quick acceleration. In order to manage this power, the choice of the 15x137x1.6 inch Cobra track is very appropriate and serves the STX model well. In addition to providing very good traction, this track remains very maneuverable in tight turns.

I always worry about having to compromise on handling when riding a 4-stroke snowmobile. Fortunately, the SRV chassis manages to greatly reduce the impression of engine heaviness, while offering a riding position that favors maneuverability. The STX series’ front and rear suspensions are particularly effective, with gas shocks that are well calibrated for the vehicle. The Tuner dual-pin skis keep the vehicle very stable in a straight line, but lack a bit of bite in some of the more pronounced curves. Don’t worry though, this can easily be corrected by various options available at your dealer.

Francois and Steve were right to make me rediscover the SR-Viper. I have enjoyed my trail rides with a vehicle that has matured in all its components. It is clearly the snowmobile that satisfies the needs of the vast majority of trail riders who travel throughout the different regions of Quebec. In addition to offering complete standard equipment, the SR-Viper STX-DX is the ideal snowmobile for anyone looking for a trail sled offering comfort, performance and reliability.
