What you should know about Snowmobile Accidents. In Quebec, more than 400,000 people drive a snowmobile or a quad. Snowmobiling alone generates some $2 billion in economic spin-offs each year. It’s a whole industry that makes the province dynamic. The only downside is that 2/3 of snowmobile accidents resulting in death occur off the marked trails. That’s why the Off-Road Vehicle Act requires every owner of a snowmobile or ATV to carry liability insurance of at least $500,000. In addition, you are required to pay the annual registration fee for your snowmobile or ATV.
What is the purpose of the registration fee?
Registration fees are used to compensate victims of accidents on public roads. The funds are also used for financial assistance programs for off-road vehicle clubs. The funds are also used to develop and maintain infrastructure to preserve wildlife.
Many people mistakenly believe that license fees cover injuries resulting from a snowmobile or ATV accident. This is not the case. The Automobile Insurance Act does not provide compensation for injuries sustained in an accident with these types of vehicles.
The only exception is if the accident occurs on a public road and involves a snowmobile or quad AND an automobile. In such a case, you will be entitled to the same benefits as if you had been a passenger in an automobile.
Legal protection: a precious help in case of a problem.
Are you the victim of a snowmobile or ATV accident that is not covered by the SAAQ? To obtain compensation, you will have to sue the person who caused the damage. You will also have to assume the costs – often very high – that such proceedings entail. Legal protection insurance is a valuable asset in the event of an accident: it covers part of the lawyer’s fees and expert’s fees. Why go without it?
With safe and responsible driving, club membership and legal protection, you can enjoy your hobby with peace of mind.
Enjoy the ride!
